Here is the secret Black Friday banners do not tell you: on most famous products, the stores charge almost the same price. We checked. The real money is not in finding the same product $2 cheaper. It is in the other product — the one that does the same job for 20, 40, even 50 percent less.
So this year we are tracking swaps, not discounts. Five famous products, five alternatives that do the same job, and the checked price of each. When either price moves, we add the new number and its date — the October baseline never moves.
1. The TV swap
The famous one: LG C6 OLED TV, 55" — $999.99 at Amazon.
The OLED everyone wants this year: perfect blacks, the picture every review raves about.

Same 55-inch 4K screen size, same movie-and-game job. The trade-off, honestly: Mini-LED cannot match OLED's perfect blacks in a dark room. In a bright living room, most people will never miss them.

2. The tablet swap

Same job for browsing, video, reading and the kids. The trade-offs, honestly: Android instead of iPadOS, and 64GB of storage instead of 128GB. If your life is already in Apple's apps, stay with the iPad. If it is not, this is half price.

3. The earbud swap
The famous one: Apple AirPods Pro 3 — $199.00 at Amazon.

Same job: noise cancelling, all-day calls and music. The trade-off, honestly: you give up Apple's pairing extras and some noise-cancelling strength. The fit and sound punch well above the price.

4. The coffee swap
The famous one: Breville Barista Express — $699.95 at Amazon.†
The home espresso machine that built the category: grinder built in, cafe shots at home.

How to use this page
Before you buy any of the famous five during Black Friday, open this page and check two numbers: today's price of the famous one, and today's price of its swap. Buy the famous one only if its price has fallen enough to close the gap. Otherwise, the swap is the smart money — it was the smart money in October, at full price.
When NOT to buy: do not buy the swap to save money on a job you do not have. A cheaper espresso machine is not a saving if it sits in a cupboard. And if you truly need the famous one's one special thing — OLED blacks, Apple's apps, the laser — pay for it with a clear conscience. That is what the trade-off lines are for.
